One Book to read as strongly recommended by Samuel Peck:
Ideas By Peter WatsonSeriously, if you have like 2-3 months to spare, with the ORD-Uni transitory period being the best reason, READ THIS BOOK. yeah i know its tough and lengthy and feels like reading a dictionary for people who only read gay stuff like Mitch Albom and stupid get-rich self-help books, but seriously it is one of the best books i have ever read, and i am not ashamed to declare i do read a lot.
It, basically and according to what the book claims, is but a mere history of ideas. But there are ideas, and there are ideas. The book seriously encompasses a whole shitload of stuff, tracing the evolution of man and culture and language; tracing how Christianity had its basis in Jewish beliefs and subsequently leeching ideas from pagan beliefs, greek philosophy like Aristotle, and eventually claiming all these ideas its own, how the Catholic Church grew into a monstrosity and was one of the factors behind the Dark Ages; tracing how and why Asia was the global superpower followed by Europe followed by America. And so much much much much more. Seriously, after reading this book I am more convinced of the fact that i will never be a Christian, or a Catholic at least.
Seriously, anyone, everyone, should read this book. I will not hesitate to lend you if you ask. haha
One Singer to check out as strongly recommended by Samuel Peck:
Cyndi Lauper
yeah i know, Samuel recommending a Pop SInger?? Samuel, who only listens to obscure gay shouting noisy cacophonous heavy metal bands and underground purist true-to-the-roots hiphop and an occasional classical composer??
yeah, seriously Cyndi Lauper is good stuff. dunno why she was compared and had a rivalry with Madonna. yeah, besides the obvious and well-known and overplayed hits like Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and True Colors and Time After Time, there are songs out there that display her true vocal prowess. Check out Night To Remember,
I'M GONNA BE STRONG (GD STUFF), Who Let In The Rain and First Night Without You on Youtube. And yeah, check out the multi-celebrity charity song
We Are The World, and wait for Cyndi Lauper's segment. she is the hopping around one with the kuazhang flamboyant colored hair and the screeching. But it was her screeching in this vid that made me check out her songs. haha. seriously, she is good stuff. mild EdwardScissorhands-like eccentricity with a unique screechy voice. really.
